SHUTDOWN EXTENDED: Michigan Governor Extends ‘Stay at Home’ Order, Business Closures Until June 12

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.26.20

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended her state’s ‘Stay at Home’ order until at least June 12th; prompting a fierce backlash from the business community clamoring to get back to work during the Coronavirus pandemic.

“While the data shows that we are making progress, we are not out of the woods yet,” the governor said in a news release. “If we’re going to lower the chance of a second wave and continue to protect our neighbors and loved ones from the spread of this virus, we must continue to do our part by staying safer at home. If we open too soon, thousands more could die and our hospitals will get overwhelmed. While we finally have more protective equipment like masks, we can’t run the risk of running low again.”

“I’m never going to apologize for the fact that because there was a vacuum of leadership at the federal level, we had to take action to save people here in Michigan,” Whitmer added. “It has not come without a cost. I recognize that. I know a lot of people are stressed about the job they lost or the business that might not open. But there’s also over 5,000 families that are mourning the loss of a loved one.”

DEVELOPING: Michigan Governor Endorses Joe Biden Just Days Before Democratic Primary

posted by Hannity Staff - 3.05.20

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer officially endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden Thursday; a serious blow to Sen. Bernie Sanders just days before voters in that state head to the polls.

“Working families in Michigan need a president who will show up and fight for them, and Joe Biden has proven time and again that he has our backs,” she said in a statement. “Michiganders have grit. We’re tough. We know what it’s like to be overlooked and counted out. And we know that when you get knocked down, you pick yourself up and get back to work. Joe Biden has been right there with us in the tough fights.”

“Joe Biden is the candidate we need to defeat Donald Trump in November. He’s always had our backs. Now, I’m proud to have his,” she added.

Sanders narrowly defeated Hillary Clinton during the state’s 2016 primary; beating the former Secretary of State 49% to 48%.

EMERGENCY EXTENDED: Michigan Governor Extending Virus Restrictions Until May 28

posted by Hannity Staff - 5.01.20

Democratic Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced this week her decision to extend the state’s disaster declaration until May 28th despite widespread protests against the Coronavirus restrictions.

“COVID-19 is an enemy that has taken the lives of more Michiganders than we lost during the Vietnam War,” Whitmer said in a statement.

“While some members of the legislature might believe this crisis is over, common sense and all of the scientific data tells us we’re not out of the woods yet,” she added.

“Lawmakers in the Republican-controlled state legislature have said they are planning to sue Whitmer over her exercise of state emergency powers during the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Detroit Free Press. The legislature failed to approve Whitmer’s order to extend the declaration, leading her to pass it via an executive order,” reports The Hill.

“By refusing to extend the emergency and disaster declaration, Republican lawmakers are putting their heads in the sand and putting more lives and livelihoods at risk,” Whitmer said.
