Democrats’ Long History of Loving Fidel Castro

Fidel Castro

Sen. Bernie Sanders’ comments on Fidel Castro are not unique. In fact, the very people and party that are trying to distance themselves from his statement, have all been saying similar things since the late 70’s. In 1978 the Democratic candidates all participated in a debate on conservative legend William F. Buckley Jr.’s show “Firing Line.” A New York Times article highlighting the dramatic moments shows that Democrats had been placating Cuba’s murderous dictator for quite a while.

“A dramatic moment in the debate came when Mr. Buckley asked Mr. Jackson about a toast he made to Fidel Castro on a visit to Cuba. Referring to the political prisoners the Cuban leader held, Mr. Buckley asked if the toast meant a ”long life for Castro and a short life for his prisoners?”

Mr. Jackson replied that he, too, wished that Mr. Castro would ”change his ways,” but noted that on the same visit he had brought home 30 Americans who had been held prisoner.

Mr. Gephardt, in an indirect criticism of Mr. Jackson, said in response to the same question: ”I don’t think we should spend a long time talking to Fidel Castro as long as he has troops in Angola” and Nicaragua.

Debate Over Trade

But Mr. Biden, who has often sparred with Mr. Jackson, came to his rival’s defense. ”A lot of world leaders toast leaders they don’t like,” Mr. Biden said.” — The New York Times

In April of 2009, a delegation from the Congressional Black Caucus took a trip to Cuba and met with Fidel Castro and praised him after the meeting.

“Key members of the Congressional Black Caucus are calling for an end to U.S. prohibition on travel to Cuba, just hours after a meeting with former Cuban president Fidel Castro in Havana.

[Rep Barbara] Lee and others heaped praise on Castro, calling him warm and receptive during their discussion…

‘It was quite a moment to behold,’ Lee said, recalling her moments with Castro.

‘It was almost like listening to an old friend,’ said Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Il.), adding that he found Castro’s home to be modest and Castro’s wife to be particularly hospitable.

‘In my household, I told Castro he is known as the ultimate survivor,’ Rush said.” — Politico (CBC members praise Castro)

Then, in August 2009 Representative Diane Watson praised Fidel Castro for his work on healthcare in Cuba.

“It was just mentioned to me by our esteemed speaker, ‘Did anyone say anything about the Cuban health system?’

And lemme tell ya, before you say ‘Oh, it’s a commu–’, you need to go down there and see what Fidel Castro put in place. And I want you to know, now, you can think whatever you want to about Fidel Castro, but he was one of the brightest leaders I have ever met. [APPLAUSE]
And you know, the Cuban revolution that kicked out the wealthy, Che Guevara did that, and then, after they took over, they went out among the population to find someone who could lead this new nation, and they found…well, just leave it there (laughs), an attorney by the name of Fidel Castro.”

Finally, when the murderous dictator of Cuba, Fidel Castro, died in 2016, the media heaped the same praises as Sen. Sanders on him for days. Media members including Joy Behar, Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell, Christiane Amanpour, and Whoopie Goldberg all praised Castro.

The Democrats’ and the media’s outrage over Sen. Sanders’ comments are hypocritical. As many of them and their friends have all made the same claim, and have never been asked to apologize.
